Original post made by Bob Moriarty, Team Parent, Portola Valley: Ladera, on Mar 29, 2010

Junior Kyle Zirbes snapped a 2-2 tie with a run-scoring double in the top of the fifth inning as Menlo-Atherton defeated Whitney-Rocklin, 8-2, in its opening game of the Cordova Easter Tournament in Rancho Cordova Monday afternoon.

The Bears broke open a close game by scoring two runs in the fifth inning and four more in the seventh to win their fourth straight, moving their season record to 6-4.

Starting pitcher Nils Gilbertson earned the victory, limiting Whitney to two runs over the first four innings. Cam Winn pitched brilliantly in relief, surrendering just a single and no runs over the final three innings. M-A pitchers did not walk any Whitney hitters, throwing just 72 total pitches over seven innings.

The Bears’ offense produced nine hits, including three by shortstop Casey Eason (who also scored three runs), two doubles by third baseman Ryan Chilcoat, and a two-run double by catcher Jeff Keller. In addition to Keller, Zirbes, Chace Warren, Patrick Moriarty, and Cam Rowland drove in runs for M-A.

Menlo-Atherton returns to action on Tuesday with Cordova Easter Tournament contests against Capital Christian-Sacramento at 10 a.m. and Wood-Vacaville at 4 p.m.
