Analysis: Results are in, but what to make of Bohannon poll?

Original post made on Mar 16, 2010

For the second time in a year, a poll has indicated strong support among Menlo Park voters for one of the largest single land development proposals in the city's history. The motivations of the company that commissioned the poll — and the question of whether it will have any bearing on the project's prospects — remain a mystery.

The city and the council should ignore the results. The survey was bought and paid for by the developer, who wants the project. The pollster knows how to get the answers the developer wants.
Are all of the survey questions and the response options available to the public? Those polled can verify whether these were what they were asked, and everyone can judge how valid any responses are. Many of us who were surveyed found that the questions were very oddly worded and extremely difficult to answer.
If I remember correctly, the poll didn't include information about impacts on the city (traffic congestion, schools, water supply) or the fact the project does not comply with current General Plan or zoning rules. It also did not describe when anything would be built or what alternatives there are. This information could have a major impact on the responses.

I was surveyed. I found the questions misleading, and at many points had to tell the caller that a question contained so many buried assumptions that it was impossible to respond.

This was not a bona fide survey, but a propaganda piece in disguise. The council should ignore the "results."

After reading the article, I urge the city council members to come out united and tell David to stick his "push poll" where the sun don't shine.
And David: I dare you to go ahead and try to circumvent things by going the initiative route, like you're threatening the council with doing. But guess what - we ain't that stupid and ain't gonna buy your spin. Just ask Mickie Winkler and Lee Duboc about trying to convince MP voters that up is down and down is up.
