On March 4, 2010 I filed a complaint with the Atherton Police Department that I was the victim of identity theft.
During my tenure as Atherton's Finance Director, my Town issued credit card was used fraudulently by unknown persons to subscribe to various interned dating services.
Based upon conversations I have had recently with various Atherton residents, it is my understanding that a member of the Atherton City Council has assembled a dossier on my person. This dossier includes copies of the internet dating related credit card charges and one or more e-mails sent to my Town of Atherton e-mail account purportedly in response to postings I allegedly placed on certain unspecified internet dating sites.
It is also widely known that I was subject to a nine-month long criminal investigation by the San Mateo County District Attorney. I have recently learned that among the allegations that I was investigated for was the improper use of Town issued credit cards, including the aformentioned charges to internet dating sites.
The purpose of this posting is twofold. First of all I want to caution readers that they should be careful with their credit cards and I mean very careful.
My experience is that being a victim of identity theft can do more than wreck one's credit history, it can wreak havoc on one's marriage. It can even land someone in jail.
The second purpose of this post is to call upon the member of the Atherton City Council who has assembled a dossier on my person to turn over the dossier to the Atherton Police Department so that the circumstances surrounding my identity theft complaint can be investigated promptly and fully.
