Atherton's mounting legal troubles

Original post made by drudge report, another community, on Dec 16, 2009

As the saying goes, out of the frying pan and into the fire.

Just when the Atherton City Council thought the worst was over after it settled with a former police officer, another lawsuit was served upon the Town.

Compounding matters is that the invididual serving papers on the town isn\'t looking for a quick payday. Instead he has the resources and the will to take the Town on and to hold it accountable for perceived abuses of power.

Some would argue that the Town of Atherton is morally bankrupt. It now faces the prospect of becomming financially bankrupt as well.

As Councilman Marsala has stated "As a town we should look to build community and that does not happen by spending the taxpayer’s dollars in lawsuits against those taxpayers and the school district- especially when there are other options."

This lawsuit is a perfect example of what happens when reasonable people start listening to lawyers and stop talking to each other.

Lawyers should give advice, not dictate the decisions of intelligent elected and appointed officials. One hour of honest face to face discussion between the Town Manager and this plaintiff would have, and still could, end this dispute at ZERO cost to the Town.

Ego and legal advice should not preclude wise decisions.
