Original post made on Oct 7, 2009

A mysterious letter challenging the legality of a new development project proposed for a parcel on El Camino Real arrived at City Hall at 5 p.m. Tuesday, two hours before the scheduled start of a City Council meeting on the project.

Sounds to me like Draeger's is really, really afraid of some competition. Can you say self-serving?

Sounds more like Paul Collacchi expanding his list of projects to protest.

Draegers' attempts to try to scare the council into protecting their gourmet monopoly are pathetic.

To Trouble - I am not a big fan of Paul's, but this is not his style. While I don't agree with many of his positions, he is a class guy who would not hide behind anonymity.

While rigorous discussion and differing points of view can truly be a good thing (when done civilly and by proper process) , this last minute, beyond-the-deadline tome is ridiculous. Hope it gets thrown out. Also, such documents should not be anonymous. Make it known who is not playing by the rules.

This almost certainly was a Dreager's effort to stop the approval. It failed. Whether they will carry on with a CEQA suit remains to be seen.

Dreager's and the Beltramo brothers both sent letters urging council not to approve. They don't want the competition. This has been Draeger's attitude at many times. They tried to stop the farmer's market for years. Then they have managed to keep the farmer's market from selling certain items.

They got their building approved years ago with lots of extras that should have never been agreed upon by the then council. Then they eliminated their loading dock, to avoid paying rent on the land they didn't own. Now they use Evelyn street and parking lots for their loading trucks. This was supposed to be reviewed years ago --- no council has done that.

Now is the time to review their lack of a loading dock.

My Take.....If my memory serves me correctly, the situation with the loading dock for Dreagers was even more dastardly than you describe. The owners of the property sought to negotiate with Dreagers for increase rental of the property which Dreagers refused to do. The property owners then sought development permission from the council for this small of commercially viable piece of property. The council refused. As a consequence this small parcel in the heart of Menlo Park has never been developed. A complete waste of space. Furthermore the Public Parking lot continues to be used for the unloading of large trucks that supply Dreagers.

The influence of the Dreager Family on the decisions of the City Council over two decades is disconcerting to say the least.
