So sad.

The saddest part to this is that they had to resort to the means they used to end their life together. Chances are they discussed this, and neither of them wanted to be without the other, but they had no legal resource to end their suffering together, so they needed to do it this way. Keep in mind that one of them pulled the trigger on the other. There needs to be more comforting ways for people to make this difficult decision, so that they are at peace with their last moments together, and not stressful to them and their families.

Let's put the blame where it belongs. On the California legislature.

They've created an environment where if you are sick and dying you likely won't be allowed to get enough morphine because it could make you an addict, or you could possibly overdose.

If I'm dying and I need morphine let me choose how much I want, even taking the risk of overdosing. Why does the state feel the need to leave dying people in pain?

"Get serious": This couple was 83 years old, and as the article said, they were both suffering illnesses. It would have cost them very little to help them stop their suffering in a more dignified way, if only it was legal for somebody to supply the means to them. That has nothing to do with "the for-profit, greedy insurance industry", as you so eloquently put it. Talk about an opportunistic and disgusting comment! Besides, they were probably on Medicare--you know, government run.

"Show some respect": My initial comment was absolutely pertinent to the article, and it's "sadness". "Get serious" is the one who interjected the "for-profit, greedy insurance industry" into the mix. It's interesting you didn't chastise that person. I guess the only ones you want to hear from are those who share your viewpoint. To that end, I will not intrude further upon your narrow mind in this thread.

I have known Mr. Stoddard for many years as a kind gentlmen who would take his early morning walks along the Alameda. Often times I would be walking my dogs in his neighborhood and he would take the time to pull his car over, get out and talk or we would enjoy a short visit at his mailbox. Always kind, always polite. I'm saddened but feel comfort knowing he and his wife are at peace.

Always in my thoughts.
