BRING BACK THE BENCH

Original post made by Autumn Stanley, Portola Valley: Los Trancos Woods/Vista Verde, on Oct 1, 2008

I'm a frequent visitor to the Menlo Park Library, and every time I go there I am distressed anew to see the apparently homeless black man with all his worldly goods in a few bags and bundles beside him, lying or sitting on the grass because the bench where he once sat has been removed. Of course it could be argued that it was unfair of him to monopolize that bench, and perhaps those who decided to remove it thought that by doing so they could drive him away. But it has now been YEARS, and he is still there, in silent protest and reproach.
I would like to see the bench returned--but not just for him. Sometimes the Library is late opening, or I (and others) are early, and we need a place to sit down, too, especially those of us who are over 65 and have bad knees. PLEASE, AS A MATTER OF HUMANITY, IF NOT OF CHRISTIAN CHARITY, BRING BACK THE BENCH (AND ADD A COUPLE MORE)!
