The walk-signal device talks but what is it saying?

Original post made by David Boyce, Almanac staff writer, on Apr 7, 2008

What is the pole-mounted walk-signal device at the corner of El Camino Real and Menlo Avenue saying in its mechanical voice as you wait to cross El Camino?

Suggestions from passersby on the scene: "Let's go," "Let's hope," and "Let's vote."

Any other ideas?

I would have sworn it says "Try to cope."

No, no, no. It's saying "Abandon all hope." Must be talking to Paul.

Someone is making stuff up on this thread. I heard two syllables. Sadly for someone with my world view, one of them was not "Plink" or "Ploink."
