Time and time again we petition for stopping unwanted mail. Than it gets to the senators who get hit over the head when they try to bring a bill into action to do a do not mail list. Why? Duh. The USPS and the Direct Mail Lobbiest put a halt to these bills claiming it will put the USPS out of business.
Maybe the bill should be to privatize the USPS than put the Do Not Mail list into action. I have been a long time member of http:/www.stopthejunkmail.com but why should I have to opt out of mail when It should be my choice.

Yes, there might be other solutions, like privatization.
The USPS is controlled by the Federal Government, and there is a huge vested interest in the postal service.
But shouldn't the federal government be facilitating/promoting high-speed internet (and cellphone-enabled e-mail) as a universal way to communicate? The postal service should be phased out or privatized.
One market-based way to cut down on junk mail would be to raise the price of junk mail postage. Mailers would be more selective.
