Project Read needs volunteer tutors

Original post made by Newsboy, another community, on May 3, 2007

Project Read-Menlo Park is in great need of new volunteer tutors, and is holding a series of training sessions beginning May 15 for volunteers willing to help adults in the program learn to read.
Sessions are scheduled for Tuesday, May 15, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.; and Saturday, May 19, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. A follow-up session is set for Tuesday, June 26, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
The nonprofit Project Read matches volunteers with adult learners -- either native English speakers with limited or no reading skills or English as a Second Language (ESL) students.
Students work one-on-one with their students, meeting once or twice a week.
Beyond the basics of teaching reading and writing skills or improving speaking skills, student goals may include working toward a job opportunity, helping children with school work, or reading a newspaper.
Many students are waiting to be matched with a tutor, Project Read staff members say.
Tutor training is held at the Menlo Park Library, 800 Alma St. To register, call Roberta Roth at 330-2525 or e-mail her at rlroth@menlopark.org.
