Byrd's Filling Station in San Mateo and Right On! Refillery in Los Altos stock everything from bar shampoo to boba straws in an effort to reduce reliance on single-use plastic.

It's a great idea but there are three issues for me. One is they only carry one choice of any product. Don't like the organic soap? Tough. No choice. Second, many bulk foods need to turn over pretty quickly to maintain the initial quality. How long has that olive oil been sitting exposed to air? And third, it requires a pretty high standard for food handling by the customer. Some people just don't get the concept of germs. I'd feel better if people dropped in and staff filled containers.
