Existing EMUs that do surge charging at each stop would do just fine - with no poles and no wires between stations.

Yep.

The Atherton Rail Committee years ago made the point in meetings that 'electrification' and/or the retirement of the old diesel locomotives can be accomplished without stringing the electrical wiring.

But Caltrain didn't listen, and ignored the fact that electrification wasn't going to occur south of Diridon.

I'm very pro-public transit, and these hybrid trains can be a solution for not only diridon-to-Gilroy but potential expansion beyond that: RWC<>Fremont, Fremont<>Sacramento, Diridon<>Seaside.

Having 1 pool of locomotives would have been a better solution for everyone. But CalTrain is CalTrain.

Just imagine how much CalTrain could have saved by just electrifying each station and no overhead wires in between stations starting in SF for the entire system

Peter:

The electrification of the Caltrains tracks for Caltrain is a ruse. HSR needs the overhead wires. If HSR hadn't been in the picture (that's where the money came from), Caltrain might have changed to battery powered trains. Just more California corruption on display.
