Those are good things to spend money on, Governor Newsom. But, here's something of great strategic consequence that is receiving no mention whatsoever: Water. The environment watchers are predicting permanent drought for our state due to climate change, and therefore we surely can anticipate serious water shortages. The Central Valley aquifer is being depleted to the degree that land is sinking ever lower. Our annual Sierra snow-pack water content is less than ever. We are already currently watching our water-bills climb. Because it is a more strategic, long-term problem, it is getting little attention. However, California's agriculture industries -- an important portion of its business -- are water-intensive. We will someday in the near future wake up to discover that water shortages have become significantly greater and that water has become more expensive than oil. The sooner we pay serious attention to this issue, and deal with and invest in it, the more we may be able to avert the kind of crisis (or worse) that the Covidepidemic has brought us.
