Could new rail project ease traffic gridlock on Dumbarton Bridge?

Original post made on Mar 18, 2021

Interest is picking up in the Dumbarton Rail Corridor, a potential 18-mile public transit route that would connect Union City to Redwood City, with stops along the way in cities including East Palo Alto and Menlo Park.

I agree with Hilton that Marsh Road is underserved by transportation, but this is probably a good thing for the residential neighborhood. At the Marsh Rd proposed station, nearby is a shopping center, high rise office buildings, a large park (recreation), a hotel (NIKKO -nearby )and 101 to connect with, so I think a stop at Marsh Road would be valuable someday.

It seems like great idea. However, before committing $3B+ (these #'s are always really 2 to 10X), a "For Profit " enterprise would test the route & concept IMMEDIATELY by setting up a HOV Lane & Bus Bridge (with very frequent service) on the proposed route. If the buses are popular & oversubscribed it should accelerate the planning & project. A "Bus Bridge" of "Google-Like Buses" that pick up at the proposed stops & are in a HOV Lane all the way would be a great evaluation & without making a massive (irreversible) bet without real data.
In short - prove the concept ASAP before committing massive (& limited) Public Funding.

Will the schedules be integrated with other transits such as CalTrain, BART and SamTrans? So that people can include a transfer and still get to work or home quickly.
And will there be one ticket purchased for the entire route, including transfers? Having un-integrated transit systems as we now do is very impractical, to put it mildly.

If you follow the same tracks as Caltrain as you get to Sequoia station - it looks okay - not too many road crossings. If you have to have your own tracks - for lightrail, BRT, or automated vehicles - it gets tricky. I like the idea of very frequent automated vehicles, but it might get messy in that area. Would any grade separations need to be added?
