State's first cases of South African COVID-19 variant identified in Bay Area

The Stanford Clinical Virology Lab identified two cases of the variant, one each in Santa Clara and Alameda counties. The Santa Clara County case involved a person who had returned from international travel in mid-January.

Regarding COVID-19 variant virus. There have been many reported false positive cases. Does the genomic sequencing test produce any false positives? Is this test only done in a lab? Will the normal drive through testing show a variant? Could some of the normal positives tests be the variant and not show it? Thanks.
