What a gravy train this guy is on! Full pension from Pleasanton PD, interim salary from Menlo Park PD and now a $200k per year job in leafy San Rafael. I am not a police officer however if I was I would be seriously demoralized by this behavior. Is there no opportunity for upward mobility in the police? Is there any wonder some get bitter in their old age? The collection of upward of $300k per year by a retired officer in this new role is very unfair. (Would not happen in other countries, if you retire and rehire you forfeit your pension). Will never happen here. Sad PS. I wonder where (Ret) Chief Bertini will land in a plum new role. Does anyone know?

As I recall, the previous Chief of police, Bertini, was or is being investigated. He abruptly quit during a press conference. If they didn't have an officer being groomed for the Chief position, what was Menlo Park to do, except bring in an interim Chief? Furthermore, If Mr. Spiller served out his whole career for Pleasanton, and therefore has earned his pension, this has nothing to do with him taking another, new job at full salary. In fact, this is exactly what happens to our members of the Senate and Congress---pension after service (it does differ depending on age at retirement and years of service.) They do not lose this pension if they take another job---say, as a professor, or in industry somewhere. The former City Manager of Menlo Park, Alex McIntyre, was asked to leave---paid to leave--his position in Portola Valley. He got an enormous amount of money. He then took the position in Menlo Park at full salary. He left for the same position in Ventura. Of course this kind of thing happens in this area.
