Elizabeth Lewis and Cary Wiest for Atherton City Council

Original post made on Oct 9, 2020

Atherton doesn't always have a contested City Council election, but when it does, you can expect things to get lively. This year's race, between incumbents Elizabeth Lewis and Cary Wiest and challengers Christine David and Diana Hawkins-Manuelian, is no different. In neighboring cities, the most contentious issues are the housing crisis, the pandemic and police reform. In Atherton, the pivotal issue of the Nov. 3 election is the Menlo Park Fire Protection District.

"Wiest's full-throated support of keeping Atherton in the fire district,"

If you believe then this I have a bridge to sell you.

This is pure election pandering by Wiest.

This is not supposed to be a one issue election (fire district), or an election without an important issue (fiscal propriety of maintaining an independent police department, which no candidate is willing to tackle). However, I'm very disappointed the Almanac doesn't see the wisdom of new blood on the council. A fifth term for Elizabeth Lewis? That's too much for anyone. (No dig against her; I'm amazed anyone would be willing to do it for so long). But we desperately need fresh perspectives.

I challenge Wiest to post on this Forum a promise to not pursue either detachment from the Fire District or property tax reparations from the Fire District (which would require taking fire services away from East Palo Alto and Menlo Park).

The only way to put this messy issue behind us is to vote Wiest out of office and fortunately we have two much better candidates in David and Hawkins-Manuelian.
