The issues that the Council has identified are well chosen -- all three have a major impact on our quality of life. Furthermore, city actions can have a significant impact on two of them: housing and transportation.

What the city can do to address climate change is less obvious, but that does not lessen its importance. As Councilmember Carlton said, cities are part of a system.

The two existential threats we face are climate change and nuclear war. By itself, Menlo Park is powerless against either, but we have ways to let state and federal governments know that they are failing their responsibilities to cities. Menlo Park has done this before by joining organizations like Mayors for Peace and through its Sister Cities program. Let's continue to look for such opportunities.
