Candidate may face FPPC investigation of possible PAC collaboration

Original post made on Feb 19, 2020

The California Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC) has confirmed it will follow up on a complaint it received on Jan. 30 raising suspicions that state Senate candidate Annie Oliva has collaborated with an independent expenditure committee supporting her run to represent California's District 13. If she has, it would be in violation of campaign rules set forth in the Political Reform Act.

Maybe a vote for Annie Oliva should just count as a vote for the real estate group bankrolling her campaign and that group, if she wins, can just have the seat - cutting out the middle(wo)man.

Independent Expenditure Committees
Campaign Disclosure Manual 6

However, an expenditure will not be considered to be coordinated with
a candidate merely because:
• Interview. The person making the expenditure interviews
the candidate on issues affecting the person making the
expenditure.
• Photograph or Press Release. The person making the
expenditure has obtained a photograph, biography, position
paper, press release, or similar material from the candidate or
the candidate’s agent.
• General Request for Support. The person makes the
expenditure in response to a general, non-specific request
for support by a candidate or committee, provided that there
is no discussion with the candidate or committee prior to the
expenditure relating to details of the expenditure.

Wayne is correct, with about 90% of the funding for Annie Oliva coming from the real estate and property management industry, it essentially gives that industry a state senate seat. Though there is a disclaimer - Annie had her Broker's license revoked by the State as she dipped into customers trust accounts - so she's not a full real estate agent anymore! LOL
