How is this possible? What time did the beakins occur? In which lot did they take place? What about the license plate readers?

Could be wrong but I don't think Ladera is actually part of Portola Valley, and thus the license readers are further up Alpine Rd.

@whatever: one of the cameras is along Alpine Rd between Ladera and the freeway. So maybe (?) they'll be able to find something

The getaway cars are almost always stolen. Downtown Palo Alto is really bad too, and it is happening in broad daylight.
It happens very quickly and the police aren’t going to endanger the public with a high-speed chase.

Re: timing----at least one of the smash and grabs occurred between 6:40 p.m. and about 7:45-8:00 p.m. We had 6:45 p.m. reservations for dinner and came out after to find police with flashlights and some very unhappy young people, whose car had a window broken. We were parked two cars away from that car. It felt like this was the first of break-ins, because the police were actively looking around, and all was quiet when we went in for dinner.

License plate readers are indeed north (aka west) of the shopper. Per the SO press release they are reviewing info to see if they can glean any info on potential suspects.

I’ve heard similar information. The thefts occurred at approximately 6:30pm out in front of the UPS store in the row of cars closest to Alpine. Lots of people would have been in the area. Don’t know if the plate readers have been helpful but have heard that Bianchini’s cameras caught the whole affair. A get away car drove slowly down the lot as two thieves worked their way down the parked cars looking in with flashlights. Admittedly this is hearsay information, but from good sources. Worried that homes may be next. Report ANY suspicious activity to the Sheriff. Lock your doors and keep security systems armed. Also review your camera footage for suspicious activity.
