Hillview's New Program

Original post made by Teacher, Menlo Park: Sharon Heights, on Aug 30, 2019

Willy Haug, Principal of Hillview Middle School, should be given some credit for a promising program. This year, Hillview Middle School has implemented the “Mentoring” program aimed at solving an intractable problem: the 85%/15% divide. Menlo Park City Schools have been plagued by an issue endemic to public/private schools: underperformance. Underperformance-for-groups-historically-underrepresented-in-higher-education is the term of the day. But however you personally term it, the district has and is not doing enough with its best resources (namely, excellent teachers) to solve the achievement-gap problem. This year, that’s changing. The “Mentoring” program puts four subject-area experts in front of fifteen to twenty students* once each day: this is an unprecedented and easily justified investment of premium resource.

With what I know of the students I see, the return on this investment in our future will uplift us all.

*this works out as roughly 15% of the student population
