New coalition plans to invest $540 million for Bay Area affordable housing

A coalition of businesses, philanthropies, housing advocates and community and faith leaders announced Thursday an ambitious plan to invest $540 million over the next 18 years to preserve and build affordable housing and advocate for policies to protect and construct it in the Bay Area.

Affordable for whom? What are the price points? And is the idea to have municipalities free up land now used for, oh, say the homeless or greenery or open spaces? Are they for the gardeners, housekeepers, and others who now must commute horrible distances that take hours each day.

Seeing what has happened east of 101 via Marsh Road boggles the eyes at first sight. Corporate entities are getting the land, approved usage, so the area around Baylands Park no longer looks above a green treeline up to the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Corporates want housing for their employees regardless of the cost to livability for this precious area. It's another form of of those with the money being attended to.

A large part of the housing crisis is directly attributed to Jerry Brown's move to eliminate local redevelopment agencies and divert the money into his high speed rail vanity project. That money is wasted and gone forever.

I agree with Beth -- affordable for whom? There are houses that are about 1000 sqft, 2 bedroom 1 bath in Menlo Park valued about $1.5 MM. Even if the price were cut in half, that's still pricey and not much floor space.

So how much is an affordable home and where is it located?
