Speier and Eshoo speak out against shutdown

Original post made on Jan 23, 2019

As the federal shutdown moves past the one-month mark, the toll on federal workers continues to increase and, according to The Almanac's local congressional representatives in Washington, there's no end in sight.

The Trump Shutdown is a hostage scam by Trump. He had two YEARS under GOP control to build his wall, and even the GOP didn't want it.

The Trump Shutdown started under GOP leader Paul Ryan, not Nancy Pelosi.

Do not give in to Trump hostage-taking.

Factless, of course. From the hoarse mouth:

"I will be the one to shut it down. I'm not going to blame you for it” - Donald Trump.

Trump's Tantrum is ridiculous - he had two years to build the wall. No one wanted it until the Democrats took over in the House that Trump lost.

I’m just amazed at how so many posters rant on about Trump this and Trump that and they never offer any solutions. The wall and the shutdown have come about because politicians in DC refuse to do their jobs and fix immigration. It is broke on so many levels. We wouldn’t be having this discussion (or trump in the WH) if politicians would do the job they are paid to do. I don’t have any problems with immigrants but I do have a problem with people who don’t pay taxes yet place a burden on public infrastructure. Any solutions?

"Any solutions?"

The simplest solution is two fold. First make E verify MANDATORY and ENFORCE it. If an employer doesn't comply, then they should be prosecuted and heavily fined. That happens enough times and employers will get the message and stop hiring illegals. That eliminates the magnet (jobs). Second, set up a work visa program so that the migrant workers we need can come to this country. Back before we militarized the borders, the migrants would come up to harvest and when done go back to Mexico or Central America. They don't now because they can't be sure they will be able come back the next season.

Those two things would go a long way to solving our problem. Of course, it will never happen. The republicans are too invested in cheap labor and the democrats assume that immigrants are OK with not enforcing laws on immigration and thus will vote for Democrats. Not to mention, it's a perfect cudgel for both parties to beat each other with while telling their base they are actually doing something, while doing nothing. Neither party really wants to solve the problem. A pox on both their houses.

A key fact left out of the story — all federal workers will receive 100% of their back pay when the shutdown ends. These are employees who will have generous pensions and health care for the rest of their lives.

>> I’m just amazed at how so many posters rant on about Trump this and Trump that and they never offer any solutions.

Here are a couple:

- open the government
- adopt the Bush McCain plans fro 18 years ago.
- Trump can take the previous offer from last year as a start: $25B for security and some immigration fixes.

Trump couldn't take Yes for an answer a year ago. See MV's comments.

What about contractors?

100%cof their pay after the gov't reopens. What about now!!! Bills need to be paid etc. Employees good looks will not put food on the table or pay the bill.

... or buy gas, or pay for child care.

And the 1.2 million government contractors?

"These are employees who will have generous pensions and health care for the rest of their lives"

You are confusing them with local firefighters, cops, etc..

Look at what a TSA makes.

40+% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck, with less than a $400 buffer.

Imagine the immense costs in missing two or more paychecks.

Trump has zero empathy for others. His shutdown is just another example.

Despicable behavior, throwing a tantrum like this. And then he caved to Pelosi on his speech. What is wrong with him? Early dementia?

'Thes State of the Union is....."

Hey Jo Jo Jo

You're right about Nancy's tantrum, but you have to admit Trump didn't take the bait for a different venue, and he will get the last laugh by waiting and going in front of Congress and the rest of the World.

Nothing more powerful than the bully pulpit.

Guess it isn't enough that Facebook is infested with Russian trolls -- now they have to show up here.

At least their English skills are getting better...

>> who get less pay and Benifits (sic) than then those in the public sector

Wait... re we talking federal employees like TSA agents (a terrible pay structure) or The local Kings (FF's, LEO's, etc..)??

>> Nothing more powerful than the bully pulpit

I believe the rest of the free world has renamed it "the ******** pulpit" in Trump's honor.

Nancy was a role model for how to discipline children with tantrums like lil' Donnie - just say no.

And he folded like a cheap suit.
