Owners of fences encroaching on town's park property must apply for permits

Atherton has sent letters to Menlo Park property owners whose Felton Gables backyards abut Holbrook-Palmer Park, informing them that their fences are on town property and they must apply for encroachment permits if they want to keep them there.

Good for Atherton.

Historical fun-fact: The reason there's no public access between the park and Felton Gables is because the residents of Felton Gables demanded it years ago; they didn't want people intruding (namely parking and walking) in their neighborhood as part of enjoying the park.

The gates are a potential liability, and just as importantly the location of the private fences are a de facto theft of public property.

That said, depending on who built the fencing on Lane Place, the situation with the fence location should be dealt with: 5 feet is a LOT and that should be made right, even if it ends up being at Atherton taxpayer expense.
