There should've been a debate, they didn't even get to touch on the true meat of the real political issues.
Also, why was the entire executive staff of the Sheriffs office at this forum yelling "amen" to Bolanos when he said most accusations against law enforcement are found to be false?
Per Bolanos' campaign website it says that he works "closely" with DA Wagstaffe to prosecute to the full extent of the law. Remember Deputy Juan Lopez who was arrested at gun point for essentially running for Sheriff? Yea, the DA Wagstaffe brought on those charges. And, they were dropped...
So, why make it a campaign point to talk about false accusations against law enforcement when Bolanos essentially falsely accused his own employee of stuff? His actions dont match what he's telling the public.

Did Bolanos and Munks' trip to Vegas come up? Or was that subject off-limits for some reason? Would like to hear Bolanos' explanation.

San Mateo County Sheriff should not have an honesty issue hanging over his head, meaning Carlos G. Bolanos.
Congresswoman Jackie Speier made a similar comment about the Sheriff's office.

This is a poor piece of reporting. Dave Boyce neglects to mention the most important fact: that the audience was stacked with sheriff'S deputies and personnel. This was not a true town hall meeting. The support for the cover-up on Munks and Bolanos is appalling.

I am disappointed there's no mention of the candidates' platform on immigration in this article, which a huge theme.
Mr. Bolanos essentially touted that the Sheriff's Department was doing enough and tried to prove that through the programs they have for minority youth (are these programs even accessible to immigrant youth or are they just for minority youth?)
I felt like Mr. Bolanos was blurring the line and merging minority and diverse population programs to mean programs for immigrant populations.
Also, we did not get to hear WHY he is cooperating with ICE and publishing release dates or why twice in the last several months he had turned an undocumented immigrant over to ICE after they served their sentence.
Mr. Melville spoke about SB54 and where the discretion is his, he favors using it towards keeping families together and people at work as well as placing points of contact in the community that are easily accessible, have a relationship with the community, and are there to facilitate things like obtaining and ID.

About 1 year ago 2 SMCo sheriff's vehicles drove onto my gated property at ~3:00AM in the morning with no lights on, proceeded to an area at the back of the guest cottage, probably figured they were in the wrong place, and then drove off without explanation. This was shortly after there had been 1 or more home invasion robberies in the Portola Valley area. When I spoke by phone with Mr. Bolanos about this "invasion" and said I felt I had the need to protect myself, his immediate peremptory reply was that he thought his officers had done exactly the right thing and then hung up. I consider this man who holds his customers in such low esteem is a danger to our community and exhibits all of the quintessential characteristics of a bully. "I'm right your wrong and I'll willingly trample any rights or opinions you may have."
He should be defeated by election or replaced by impeachment at the earliest possible date! Some of his officers clearly need some guidance in community relations.

I read these blogs every once in a while, but never post.... But I'm kind of mad!
Living in both Redwood City and Menlo Park, I have had my car broken into for the 4th time in 3 years and my house broken into twice in 4 years, crime is my primary concern.
Even these people who claim to be victim rights advocates ignore how to deal with crime. I don't understand posting hourly posts about an event years ago, and ignoring the crime happening and getting worse in our communities. Honestly, it makes you look crazy to a normal person reading this.
I DO NOT CARE what happened 12 years ago on a trip to vegas or some report that Melville did or didn't file 14 years ago. I care about who is going to stop illegals breaking into my house and car!
Now before you go off and tell me I don't know they are illegal, they were caught... twice... and both times they were illegal and both times they were not deported.
That being said, immigration is my primary concern. The police did find some of my stolen items a few months later and it was someone who was in this country illegally. After going to court, this person was a "documented" gang member and had previously been arrested for evasion and resisting a police officer. Yet, was never deported, just released. even after serving a whole 14 days with 10 days credit for time already done...again released and not deported.
Because of a camera system I set up (at my own expense) they were also able to identify someone who tried to break into my house (would have been the 3rd break in) and this person was again here illegally. The police actually knew who these kids were and after an arrest, tons of other stolen property was recovered. I was told that they would not be deported because it was not a violent crime.
WHAT? If you are breaking into my house, it is violent!
I want a sheriff who is going to help stop this nonsense.
The fact that both of their websites are either silent on this topic or go out of their way to tell us what they won't do is disgusting.
Why is it so controversial to deport criminals? I'm not talking about people who are working for a living and doing their best to become a citizen, I'm talking about people who commit crimes.
I really wish these people would start pressing these politicians on their actual job of stopping crime, rather than focus this other nonsense of a rude phone call.
As you rant on about this and that, it makes you look crazy and know that besides your small bubble of other crazies, nobody else cares!

Have heard multiple incidents of deported offenders returning and reoffending within days or weeks, so I'm not sure that is a solution to the problem.
I don't know the details but to me, I think Sheriff Bolanos not having any interest in public input is part of the issue...
Did get this from the Melvolle campaign website. Sounds like if you called him as your sheriff about this issue, he would actually listen and work on addressing it using this method:
“Predictive Policing”. Predictive Policing is gathering crime data, analyzing it, and then using the results to anticipate, prevent, and respond more effectively to prevent future crimes. We will use results to educate the public in crime trends and seek to gain their input. We intend to cultivate relationships with people we serve to implement strategies at a personal level by interacting with the public face-to-face.

Forgot to mention, heard Melville speak at another event. He said community input was so valuable, his campaign number would still be good as Sheriff so people had a way to reach him. You could probably call or email him now and get a specific answer to how he would address your issue on policing since the article doesn't go into it. Website lists 650-730-3187

From Melville's Website:
" As your Sheriff, I will enforce the provisions of Senate Bill 54, and in those areas of the law where I have discretion as to how a provision is to be handled, I will handle it in the best interest of the immigrant."
I will handle it in the best interest of the immigrant... let that sit in.

Cristina Osmena , running against Jackie Speier in 14th district held an event called,YztPy “ Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery” on April 28. Word is that write in candidate for Sheriff Heinz Puschendorf spoke at length about what he knows about Operation Dollhouse, and that there is video. Word is that Mark Melville also attended. Disappointed,
Sad to hear you have been a victim so many times. However, people don't just break into cars to break into cars. One of two things happened. You either left valuables visible in your vehicle or what appeared to be valuable or someone doesn't like you and vandalized your car.
Think prop 47 and prop 57.

So we are going to victim shame someone now? He has been a victim too much so it must be his fault?
He SHOULD be able to leave whatever he wants in his car. It is HIS car and HIS items.
Are we going to apply that logic to everything? Girls who wear short skirts are asking to be harassed or raped?
We are better than that.
I'm sorry for that ridiculous comment.

Her’s why Operation Dollhouse Matters today:
Since his bust during an FBI sting of sex traffickers of children in Nevada, San Mateo voters cannot count on Carlos Bolanos as a serious regional partner to help address and end human trafficking in San Mateo and the Bay Area. Sheriff Bolanos cannot lead on a matter he doesn't want to talk about -- or wishes we would forget.

I disagree with "Why Operation Dollhouse Matters today".
I don't think the fact Bolanos and Munks were caught in that brothel necessarily means they would be soft on human trafficking in San Mateo County. Many people are hypocrites.
The reason it matters is character counts, particularly in law enforcement.
We expect law enforcement officials, especially the top one, to show character and integrity. It's important because citizens' lives and liberties depend on the fair, impartial and ethical administration of justice.
The problem here is Bolanos never admitted wrongdoing and never took any type of punishment for this. I might be willing to forgive him if he did. But it's just been stonewalling and denial.
That is not character and it's not integrity. That's the big reason Bolanos should not be Sheriff. He may do a great job on most days, and to be honest, he probably has. But it's those handful of days that his integrity in that job is going to make a huge difference on someone's life that disables him from holding it given this history.

Kelse650 makes a good point about Juan Lopez: "So, why make it a campaign point to talk about false accusations against law enforcement when Bolanos essentially falsely accused his own employee of stuff?"
This goes right to the character issue. Double standards. He doesn't want a cop to be accused by a citizen who can't "prove it", but participated in the arrest of Juan Lopez as well as his significant other and those charges have been dropped. Lopez is also a police officer. The message is, it's not okay…….unless we're doing it.
When a Sheriff has integrity, you don't see stuff like that happening.

Yesterday was a newsworthy day for Former Sheriff Deputy Juan P. Lopez. It's to bad none of the 7 papers had any interest in the case. The law firm representing him filed a 7 page document. NF433910
Detective Armando's Perjuriously Alleged the Mr. Lopez Placed a Telephone Call to the Contraband Cell Phone in order to Obtain a Search Warrant.
It has only taken 4 years to get this simple and true statement filed with the court.
This is an example of the leadership under Carlos Bolanos.

Odd phenomenon here in the last week: Every time someone posts about Bolanos on the Almanac, three people rush in to post on other stories.. Normally it's pretty slow here. Almost makes one wonder if Bolanos has directed his cronies to make sure a Bolanos story is never on top.

Just wondering why Bolanos gave the interview to the Daily Post....Would have seemed like a smarter idea to go with the San Mateo Daily Journal? The paper that "KINDA" endorsed him and that former Sheriff Munks' in-laws have or did have a stake in?
Oh wait hold on...Bolonos went with the newspaper that is only at the newsstand and not online, thus no comments. Classic.

"Bolanos agreed that law enforcement has higher standards."
This is such BS. There are so many laws being broken by the Correctional Officers and Deputies in the San Mateo County correctional facilities that get covered up. Sergeant Mike Otte was asked to retire "with pension" because he was found to be involved with a gambling operation in the Maguire Correctional Facility. Any civilian would have been incarcerated.
Detective Andrew Armando has now been promoted to a Lieutenant.
Looks like anyone that helps Bolanos with his bullying and coverups are rewarded with a promotion.
It's time for a change. Our tax money should not be financing "Club Bolanos".

It is so very disappointing to hear about the inner workings of the sheriff's office. I have spoken with several sheriff's office employees and am sad to say all are counting their years until they can retire. These are proud people, with integrity, but if you are not in the "in crowd" and don't "suck-up" you will never move ahead. What I have been told is, promotions have not been based on experience or seniority, not in many years. In fact, since Bolonos has been in office, it has been a "pay to play" environment, meaning if you test for a promotional exam and you haven't given to the Bolanos campaign you do not stand the same chance (regardless of experience or seniority) as those that have given money and their name for the "endorsments".
As Mr. Stogner mentioned about the retaliation at the sheriff's office, I have been told it's alive and well. Does anyone really believe for a second that not one sheriff's office employee has endorsed Mark Melville or even given him a donation for his campaign? It is 100 percent because of retaliation.
According to my sources the under sheriff, Trisha Sanchez's husband, retired sheriff's office Lieutenant Thomas Maloney, has been "mentoring" individuals for the sheriff's office sergeant's promotional exam for several years. He charges several hundred dollars for his "services". Once again if you do not "pay to play" and pay for Thomas Maloney's "services" you will not be afforded the same opportunities to promote. This is a total conflict of interest being that under sheriff Trisha Sanchez has control and input on these promotions.
If you check his website, like I have you will see that Thomas Maloney has been contracted to complete projects that his wife is in charge of distributing funds for.
This actually happened back when Supervisor Don Horsley was the San Mateo County Sheriff and Munks was the under sheriff. However, this kind of behavior goes towards the "good ole boy" network and these people sticking together and protecting each other. Oh and to the whole Carlos Bolonos endorsement list.
I was utterly disgusted and sick to my stomach after hearing this. Two deputies were on patrol and made a bet with each other. One deputy told the other deputy that he would buy him a coffee if he urinated on a concrete roadside memorial. The roadside memorial, located on the San Mateo coast, was that of a small girl that had been killed in an automobile accident. The one deputy took the other up on the bet and urinated on the memorial of this innocent child.
This deputy has since been promoted to a training officer, "training and mentoring" new deputies and also promoted to a detective. What is going on in this department?
As I said prior I have spoken to a few employees and also learned that in the "new" jail, the one on Maple Street, that the correctional officers and deputies have a hard time getting breaks. Even bathroom breaks are an issue, let alone a lunch break. This is due to poor hiring practices, thus lack of personnel.
This has become such a problem that many females are getting BLADDER INFECTIONS from being unable to get someone to relieve them so that they could use a restroom. What century are we living in? This is BARBARIC!
How can this be happening in San Mateo County. Is this the way the Sheriff's has been operating? Someone needs to stop this runaway train before it crashes.
If true, the incidents I have listed, in addition to what the other readers have posted indicate that Bolonos is not fit to run the Sheriff's Office. In addition, to Operation Dollhouse, Bolonos appears to be a bully in his own domain, and won't stop at anything to keep his job. We, the residents of San Mateo County, need to STOP him, and STOP HIM NOW.

What's going on? is a registered user.
On 4-22-18 at around 230 in the morning, the Redwood City Police Department responded to a call for service. The call was categorized as a disturbance/domestic violence. At some point after arriving, it was discovered that the suspect in this disturbance/domestic violence incident is currently a Lieutenant with San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.
The victim (the Lieutenant’s wife) had both bruises and scratches from the domestic violence incident. In addition to the visible injuries, the Lieutenant also took the victim’s cell phone from her.
Why wasn’t the Lieutenant arrested? Is there a restraining order on file? Were the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Departments Lieutenant firearms taken for safekeeping? This sounds like a clear case of domestic violence complete with bruises and scratches and taking the victim’s cell phone. It also sounds like just one more cover-up by Carlos Bolanos and his “good ol’ boy” network.

Remember the Troy Smith case. He was a deputy who beat up the boyfriend of his ex-girlfriend so badly the victim had to have surgery on his eye socket. For some reason the incident was "left off" the police blotter and DA Wagstaffe didn't think it newsworthy enough to put on his daily press release. Palo Alto Daily Post got wind of incident. When they asked Wagstaffe why he hadn't nofified the press he didn't have a good answer.
God knows how many other incidents like this have been hushed up by the DA and the Sheriff's office
