280-Alpine Intersection

Original post made by Observer, Portola Valley: Ladera, on Apr 7, 2018

Every day, I see drivers heading East towards 280 from menlo park blow through the intersection at Alpine and 280. I myself have been in many near collisions. Furthermore, I have personally witnessed many near misses. I recently noticed that the CHP and SMC Sheriff has been monitoring this intersection, which is a great step in reducing accidents. However, it is not enough.

There are several factors that cause a danger to those who have to enter Portola Valley turning left after getting off of 280, and for those coming from Portola Valley who need to turn left to get on 280. To list a few:
1. Drivers speeding East towards the freeway, coming in too fast to notice the stop sign.
2. Drivers ignoring right-of-way and order amongst those waiting to turn left (either into Portola Valley or onto 280)
3. Cyclists who fail to stop at the stop sign, creating confusion and near-collisions for vehicles.

The increased monitoring of this intersection is a good first step. However, there should be more precautions put into place. Firstly, the Eastbound lanes should only be reduced to a single lane. This would increase visibility of the intersection, and also allow drivers who are turning left greater visibility. Secondly, the implementation of a flashing stop sign facing towards the Menlo park direction would be a good step, since the majority of the cars who blow through the intersection come from Alpine Rd. East. And lastly, zero-tolerance enforcement should be implemented at least once a week, targeting both cars and cyclists who run the stop sign.

This is a ticking time bomb. One of these days, a fatal collision could occur as a result of a careless or dangerous driver. It is time to take action and enhance safety before anyone is hurt.

I'm pretty sure there have been fatal collisions at this location in the past. I do not know why Caltrans is resisting deploying real stop lights at this intersection. Everyone knows how to behave at stop lights. Most drivers apparently do not understand stop signs.

Yes, there have already been fatal accidents at this intersection.

I'd like to see traffic coming from the East and (some) turning left onto Arastradero reduced considerably. Is it Waze that sends them this direction? They blow through the stop signs with regularity. They tailgate you if you're coming from the East, then blow by you at the stop sign or as you cross under the highway. They put the cyclists at risk who are properly in their green lane, as they swerve across it to enter the highway.

I think the most effective thing would be to park one of the Littlefield Tanks at both entries to Portola Valley on Alpine. One toward the East, at that stop sign, and one at the corner of Arastradero.

That might at least make people pause.

Resident: I do not believe stop lights are a viable solution because the Town of Portola Valley has stated that they do not want stoplights in use, and I understand that it could ruin the rural nature of the town. Perhaps a more plausible solution would be to install flashing stop signs, like the ones on El Monte in Mountain view.

Resident Also: I agree, multiple times each day it seems I am tailgated by an impatient driver attempting to bypass 280 traffic by cutting through our town. It is extremely disturbing how disrespectful some of these drivers are, and almost always they are either coming from the menlo Park direction or getting off 280. However, despite this, I do not believe tanks would be a good solution. They could get people to slow down, sure, but would look ridiculous. Instead, speed bumps on Alpine road East would be a better solution because it would slow those drivers down and they would have to be moving a a slow pace in order to not damage their tires.

Hmmm. PV residents don't want traffic deaths, but don't want the installation of devices that will prevent those deaths. Pretty simple choice if you ask me. Unless, of course, you're self absorbed folks that think they can have it both ways. Not sure how, but.......Hmmmmm

Or maybe the menlo park residents could try to at least display basic courteous driving skills and follow the rules of the road as a starting point. Most of the drivers blowing through this intersection seem to be coming from its direction.

And exactly why would MP residents be going to PV? Nothing there to bring them there. People headed to 280? Of course, but that includes people from PA and MP and others. There's really only two access points, Alpine and Sand Hill. Again, it seems we have a bunch of entitled folks that want their cake and eat it too. Simple choice. Either you want to continue to pretend you live in a rural area or you acknowledge you don't and you deal with it. Until you do, people will continue to die. Your choice.

I almost got hit the other day with a weaver on the phone. That contributes to bad driving and not stopping. It is a dangerous world. Please be mindful of what we all do. Think!!!
