Portola Valley school board refining facilities master plan

Original post made on Apr 3, 2018

What would be even more exciting would be if the Board CAREFULLY CONSIDERED what the causes of these issues are, and how they went undetected when we recently refurbished this campus.

Here's another exciting idea: spending only the amount of money necessary to effect these repairs. I'd suggest reducing Mr. Hartwig's salary by half, for a nice start. How about we stop envying the neighboring community's buildings and start taking care of our own? We are really, really sick of the disposable culture our PVSD has toward our facilities.

What's the problem with the new swinging log toy/bench thing at CMS? It's always locked up, and so cannot be used in the manner in which is is supposedly designed. That thing cost an immense amount of money. That's a ton of money for is now a log BENCH.

Well you have to give them credit for persistence. The community has repeatedly said that we're supportive of maintenance but not a grand rebuilding vision. The board keeps coming up with new arguments for why the current schools are tottering crack houses when we know that's not the case. Notice how they've changed their messaging to emphasize what a great job they've done on maintenance...very savvy but also manipulative and insulting (like the mailer I just got from them). The examples of alarm systems, plumbing, etc, are all $50,000 - $250,000 repairs, yet somehow we keep seeing a need for $30-40 million.

Do the repairs. Stage them and do them over the years (as you should have done). Pay for it out of the maintenance fund (as you should have done). Then when the debt's all paid off we can talk about a grand vision and grand spending for the next 50 years.
