Letter: Walker feels imperiled on Menlo Park streets

I wholeheartedly agree with the "Real safe routes require action" thoughts published in the Viewpoint section on Feb. 28. I am an avid walker. I consider myself spry, fit and aware of my surroundings. Even so, there have been at least 10 occasions I could have been hit by a car at the pedestrian crosswalk at Middle Avenue and University Drive.

Totally agree with University/Middle and University being dangerous to cross.

Have been hit as a law abiding cyclist (full stop) at that intersection and had to jump back several times as a pedestrian to avoid being hit while already IN the crosswalk.

I do avoid the crosswalks at University and Middle if I can and actually feel safer "jay-walking" at some of the unmarked crosswalks (other side streets).
Sad but true.

University also has sort of turned into a racetrack since the removal of roadside parking and no other improvements (such as adding stop signs).

I also do not feel any safer riding in that bike-corridor either, as cars now see a straight shot and routinely go faster than 35 mph.
Add to that the random trashcans strewn about in the bike lane for days (which is also illegal).

The city "reacted" by putting a little placard up at the marked crosswalk at Fremont (no other signage whatsoever), and it is still taking once's life into the hands, especially at rush-hour or at dark.

What has to happen before effective and proven (and up to code) solutions get implemented in MP?
