Despite the framing in this article, the Menlo Park Library replacement project is an expensive solution in search of a problem.

I have a feeling that this isn't about a new library at all but a way to sneak in a new housing project in Burgess Park. Adding housing to the new library project was mentioned in the last article and again in this one. No thank you.

You know where we fail compared to other cities? Green space. All our neighbors have more parks per capita than we do (not including Atherton, but those homes tend to have self-contained parks).
This project is about catering to one non-resident who likes to see his name splashed on buildings funded by resident tax dollars, and also about slipping in housing. Converting public space to housing is a bad idea. Once the green space is gone, it's not coming back.
As for meeting rooms: there are a lot of them just across the parking lot from the iibrary. Are those fully utilized? I doubt it. That facility was recently remodeled. Why isn't it adequate.
City staff and council should be serving the needs of the current residents. What percentage of residents even use the library? Or want to see it converted to a community center? Remodel, sure, it's been a while, but a brand new building? Makes no sense given the tradeoffs

As for public opinion,
I Suggest you read the other Library thread, As I said it looks like about 150 to 0 against a new library.
In 10 years you will have a very large, and beautiful relic, I've never been to the Library when I couldn't get on a computer, pick out a movie or a book and find a chair to relax and read. For perspective 44,000 sq. ft. is approx. a full acre, Picture a lot in Atherton built out in full, fence to fence. Now add parking and whala you have a new library built for a king.
As for moving chairs downstairs from upstairs I'm sure we could get an agreement to buy more chairs,
