WHERE IS THE ART IN MENLO PARK ?

Original post made by Art Fan, Menlo Park: Downtown, on Jan 30, 2018

The City of Menlo Park offers its community many things, but one area that it seems to lack is public art. Nearly all cities offer this program. Art comes in many forms, such as painting, sculpture, film, dance, music, poetry, literature and so on.

This can be seen in neighboring cities, such as Atherton, Redwood City, Palo Alto and Mountain View. The City of Menlo Park used to have an active program, but it has either gone dormant or is in very limited supply.

Maybe nobody cares, but if they do, public art can add to the culture of the city, the spirit and vibrancy along with fun and excitement. My vote is for the City Council to simply appoint a few citizens to their Menlo Park Art Commission and allow them to do their job. I suspect that the community will be glad they did.

The fact that there is so much interest in remodeling the GUILD THEATER is one more reason to appoint folks from the community to the MENLO PARK ART COMMISSION. Art has the potential to lift spirits, raise awareness and a host of other benefits.

The Art Commission was established by the City Council many years ago. All it needs is for the City Council to appoint a few folks who are qualified and interested. I suspect only good things will come of it.

One Council Member mentioned at a recent Council Meeting that many cities have a 1% for art program that are part of development projects. There may be no better time to ask developers to include public art as part of their projects.
