Portola Valley: How local women made an impact in Virginia elections

Original post made on Nov 16, 2017

Fifteen Portola Valley women asked not what Virginia could do for them, but what they could do for Virginia -- though they did get something for their efforts: a discovery that the politics of Donald Trump and his fellow Republicans are vulnerable to get-out-the-vote campaigns.

What you did was interfere in another state's elections ...
No different than the purported Russian hacking into 'our' election process. Isn't that somewhat hypocritical and doesn't CA have enough serious issues of its own to warrant spending time, energy and money in THIS state?
Totally opposed to your tactics and mission.

Oh look -- someone is upset, because the people mentioned in this article were out to further the cause of democracy.

And then, this person shows off how little they actually know about the democratic process by comparing this to the actions of a nation-state to SUBVERT an election.

The educational system clearly failed in this case.

Jackrabbit indeed has his/her head in the rabbit hole and sees nothing. Does Jackrabbit believe that it's legitimate for powerful interests like the Koch brothers to infuse vast amounts of money, human resources and other influence into political activities in every corner of states all around the country while, at the same time, asserting that this modest volunteer group of involved citizens has no right to support chosen political contestants in a state other than their own? PV ladies, you are to be commended as Americans who don't just talk but walk where needed to help level the playing field. The Almanac article made pretty clear that you were not viewed as interlopers but were well received for providing fact based arguments that local politicians you were supporting could use effectively among their own constituencies. Lest we not forget, the Kochs, etc. are there -- and everywhere -- feeding their chosen side with sizable resources.

This is so impressive! What a terrific idea and accomplishment. I've participated in out-of-state phone banks going back to the pre-Obama presidency primaries via MoveOn. But we can continue to innovate! I don't consider it interference. Some states have not yet acquired the level of volunteerism as we have here in Northern California, so we can set an example. Congratulations to the Portola Valley 15.

Hmmmm I'm wondering what the comment from Jack Rabbit about interfering is referring to? Wondering if you actually get involved with CA politics which I do quite extensively. We were careful NOT to interfere in VA politics--we had thoughts about giving all kinds of CA ideas to the candidates, but instead asked them what they needed help in researching. They told US what they wanted not the other way around. Russia did indeed interfere with our elections by deceiving the electorate with lies and negativity. We instead helped to bring facts to the fore. Just the facts ma'am, just the facts. I'm proud of all of the women (and two men!) who helped us in this process. We rocked it! This is a democracy and we wanted to help and in fact we did. That's actually quite legal--unlike a foreign government trying (and successfully) tipping the scales in our elections. We plan to go to other states and help state legislative candidates. This is the body that mostly draws the lines for the US House of Representatives--fair redistricting is crucial to any democracy. It's crucial that each voter have a voice. Anyone that wants to join us is welcome!

I guess the RNC and DNC must be Putin puppets like Trump - they interfere in EVERY state!

Democrats win gubernatorial races in two states where Hillary won and Obama won twice. In fact New Jersey has been blue for the last 7 presidential elections. A big yawn. And somehow this even a news item? And is anyone foolish enough to think that these two Democratic States are a bellwether for the nation? That is like saying since Trump won Texas and Wyoming in 2016 he is going to win California in 2020. Non Sequitur. Not going to happen.

Political Observer's comments are not quite accurate--VA isn't a totally Democratic/blue state, in fact the Governor can only run for one term and the one before the current Democrat was a Republican as was the one before him and the one before that. In fact, the VA House of Delegates before this election had 100 seats, 66 were held by Republicans who made them VERY gerrymandered, VERY gerrymandered. Democrats held just 34 and in the VA state Senate there are 40 seats and 21 are held by Republicans. The former body draws the lines for the US House of Representatives, as a result there are 11 US House seats in VA with 7 Republican and 4 Democratic despite the fact that in state level races the Democrats often win. So actually state legislatures are what can and need to be redrawn/rewon to reflect the actual will of the people--the "one person one vote" theory which is one of the important parts of our Constitution and our democracy. For instance, Ohio is a state with equal numbers of registered Democrats and Republicans yet 75% of the elected officials are Republicans--this due to heavy gerrymandering by the Republicans. Our group is simply working to encourage voters to actually vote and exercise their own power. And for those that think their vote doesn't matter, one of the districts up for a recount has the two top vote getters separated by just 10 votes. So it's not boring or a "big yawn" in any way shape or form and has nothing to do with the presidential elections. The state legislatures will tell the tale over the next 4 years. The tide actually is turning.
