Guest opinion: Why Carlton should be re-elected to Menlo Park council

Original post made on Oct 23, 2016

(Opinion by John Boyle, a former member of the Menlo Park City Council.)

Last week's Almanac included an endorsement for a newcomer (Cecelia Taylor) over one of the incumbents (Catherine Carlton) in the Menlo Park City Council election, despite the fact that Carlton has been an outstanding council member for the past four years. The Almanac in fact described incumbent Carlton as having "... served the community conscientiously and with commitment."

Big decisions are being made now. Most of them affect Belle Haven. A Belle Haven voice should be at the table. Now. The Almanac editors were right to endorse Cecilia Taylor

It is a difficult choice between Carlton's experience and commitment and having someone from Belle Haven on the Council however I have felt very comfortable recommending Carlton to my Menlo Park friends.

The obvious answer is that you can have both:

Vote for Cat Carlton for her dedicated service to the community

Vote for Cecilia Taylor for a voice from the east side of the community

Take a break from Ray Mueller who is mostly representing more of the "same old same old".

Both Cat Carlton and Ray Mueller have served our community well, and deserve to continue their service as Menlo Park City Council members.

I agree with John that Ms. Taylor should spend some time on a MPK COmmission to gain experience in working with the city administration.

Carlton and Mueller have been excellent councilmembers, and have worked colaboratively with the Council as a whole.
It takes a lot of valuable experience to understand City operations, to understand Roberts Rules under which the Council operates, to understand all the zoning and planning standards that Council must pass on, to understand how the City functions.

Taylor, who moved back to Belle Haven after a 9 year absence and has not served on any commission to help her "learn the ropes" and is not yet qualified for Council.

There is only one Councilmember who lives east of San Mateo Drive. It's high time some new voices, ideas, and perspectives get on this council. Right now there are too few hard questions and too much concern about what developers want, not what residents want. With a SF State math degree and pluck, Cecilia will ask questions that need asked.

Boyle is wrong that Cecilia could not vote on issues about the Bayfront area. She lives far enough away to do so. That was a misleading statement on his part.
