Decision on new sheriff up to county supervisors

Original post made on Jun 20, 2017

Sheriff Greg Munks announced recently that he will be retiring due to health reasons on July 16, with more than two years left of what he said in November 2015 would be his final term as San Mateo County sheriff.

It's Time for Change
San Mateo County Sheriff Deputy Mark Melville is a brave man.

He is running for Sheriff of San Mateo County 2018

Everyone remembers what happened to the last brave soul who was a write in candidate against "Those Who Matter."

Carlos Bolanos is Sheriff only because of the Coup on July 12, 2016 by 3 Supervisors.

What is the status of the criminal prosecution against the last candidate, Juan Lopez? (And his girlfriend!).

Great question,
Girlfriend and the co-defendent ALL charges dismissed at Preliminary Hearing. Judge said there was No Evidence to support the charges. Now working on Factual Innocence ruling.

Juan Lopez still has 12 charges pending after 3 years can't wait to get to court.

Will be interesting to see if the DA opposes the Innocence request. It's just about impossible to get chargers dismissed at a preliminary hearing because the standard to hold over for trial is so low. It's legally equivalent to a finding of innocence. I think it would be misconduct to oppose given the preliminary ruling. Not to say that would stop this DA.

Three years and this thing still hasn't been adjudicated???!!! What a gross abuse of power by the DA. If they can't get their crap together to put on case in three years they should drop the charges. According to our illustrious DA, this case was a slam dunk.

It's disgusting that the Lopez case is still hanging out, unresolved.

I'm really surprised there isn't more outrage over this story. A police officer (Lopez) decides to run against the incumbent sheriff (Munks) and is charged with multiple crimes and arrested at gunpoint afterwards by the DA (Wagstaffe) who is a known crony/buddy of the sheriff. And this is in America, not some banana republic somewhere.

Now I suppose the argument could be made that the fact Lopez ran in an election doesn't necessarily mean he didn't commit other wrongdoing. But add in the fact that Wagstaffe also charged Lopez's GIRLFRIEND with crimes, and the judge threw those charges out. That colors the whole thing. Add in the fact that the charges against Lopez have been pending for three years.

I believe the Almanac didn't report on the charges being thrown out against the girlfriend. For whatever reason, the Almanac has really taken a position it's going to defend Wagstaffe to the hilt. They deleted a comment I made that was critical of him a few weeks ago. Maybe the publisher is friends with him. I don't know. I do know that in just about any city in America with a newspaper that practices journalism, this would be major news, and generating a lot of outrage. It's not a joke.

The first time I saw this article was 3 days ago. Its dated 1 day after the July 12, 2016 appointment COUP by 3 Supervisors and others.

"Mr. Pine said he had no comment in that he was not close enough to the department to have an informed opinion."
I find that statement to be impossible to be true. In 2010 I received a 17 page document from a female San Mateo County Sheriff Deputy.

The title "Gross Misconduct at the San Mateo County Sheriff's Department"

Mr. Stogner, I have sent this letter to you because you are the only person who has shown the courage to stand up to a corrupt government. I am a woman and employed by the San Mateo County Sheriff's Department.

Supervisor Dave Pine has a copy as does the FBI. It's been 7 years and NO help for the female deputy.
