Never would have happened if they shared their home with a dog.

"The household does not have a dog, deputies said."
I can think of a few reasons for a door being left unlocked, so my advice is: get a dog. I'm glad no one was hurt, but the increasing number of homes being entered while people are present is worrying.

Never would have gotten away if the homeowner was armed. Whatever the reason for leaving the door unlocked, if you are going to do that, you need to be prepared for anything. Maybe the person who came in was not armed, but that does not mean the next one won't be.

Maybe you should just lock your door.
If that person was armed, then the son coming home after a long night out at 4:00 get's mistakenly shot or your mother in law who can't sleep and is routing around in the kitchen scares you and Bang! Or maybe it is someone coming in to steal your $500 TV and an iPhone- you're going to kill someone for that?

Can you imagine the excitement of the perpetrator finding an unlocked door.
Hey Einstein, its 4:00 in the morning... LOCK YOUR DOORS!

Hey Bob. Youre worring me. What possible reason would you have to subject your family with possible harm by leaving an unlocked door at 4 o'clock in the morning. [Part removed.]

Funny how you get discounts on Home Insurance for good quality locks, but your premium goes up if you own a gun or a dog.
Maybe they know something we don't?
