Dozer, a black Labrador retriever belonging to Portola Valley resident Charlotte Rayfield, doesn't like anyone putting a hat on his head. He does, however, wear two metaphorical hats on most days: pet and service dog — a hat he'll be wearing a lot more when Charlotte goes to college.

Terrific article. Charlotte, you inspire me. I'm a volunteer for Canine Companions for Independence, South Bay Chapter. You might be interested to know that Charlotte and Dozer are a South Bay team, but Dozer was born here, too, making him a true hometown hero! You might also like to know that Canine Companions provides these highly trained dogs at no cost. Our big Dogfest Silicon Valley fundraiser is coming up on October 10 in Memorial Park, Cupertino. I hope everyone can come and learn about this wonderful organization.
