Report: Rent hikes greatly exceed income gains

San Mateo County has released statistics on housing costs and income for the quarter ending June 30, and the numbers confirm what anyone who has recently tried to buy or rent a home already knows — the cost of housing in San Mateo County is increasing much faster than income.

It is an intolerable situation. It is happening everywhere up and down the peninsula. But it is also happening throughout the U.S.

Our neighborhoods will change. Many people have moved out if Redwood City, not because they want to but, rather, because they have to. Some of these people have lived here all of their lives.

Another downside to people having to move because of exorbitant prices is that it separates families: multigenerational bonds are weakened because family members no longer can afford to live "around the corner" within walking distances from one another.
