What a mess. Car apparently was stopped on tracks going east, was struck by Bullet going south. Remains of car were hardly recognizable. Sad.
Many, many police cars and fire trucks.

Raise or bury the tracks. This is ridiculous.

This is awful ... and even more awful because it possibly could have been prevented. While we're still waiting for details I have a pretty good idea of how it occurred.
There's a cross-walk just AFTER the train tracks, at Alma Street. You may think you're crossing the tracks only to find the car in front of you has stopped to let someone cross the street. You're now stopped, and stuck on the tracks with no-where to go.
Menlo Park needs to remove the cross walk at Alma Street and either move it further up the street to Noel Dr (giving more space for cars to stop) or require pedestrians to walk to Laurel to cross the street.

Looks like the gate was down. I hope the driver is OK, then if they either ran the gate or were stopped on the tracks when it came down I hope they make that person pay for all the damage and take away their drivers license for a year and make them re-test to get it back. There are a lot of people who will be getting home late tonight because of one stupid mistake, I just hope the driver is one of them.

Brian - how likely is it that someone in their car on the tracks, hit by a bullet train, is okay?

The law is that you may not enter the train crossing UNTIL you have space to clear the crossing on the other side. Similarly it is against the law to stop on the train tracks at any time and for any reason.
"If you need to stop after crossing the tracks, wait until you can completely cross the tracks before proceeding. Make sure your vehicle clears the tracks before you stop.
Never stop on the railroad tracks. Remember that a train cannot stop quickly or swerve out of the way. If you are on the tracks, you risk injury or death."
