Jerry Hill introduces 'ignition interlocks' bill for DUI offenders

First-time DUI offenders would be required to install "ignition interlock devices" in their cars that will test their breath for alcohol before starting the car, if a new bill introduced by state Sen. Jerry Hill passes in Sacramento.

Hi I just came across this article dated 01/07/15and see that Senate Bill 61 would mandate a 5 year ignition interlock device pilot program. Actually, Sentate Bill 91, which is a five year Ignition Interlock (IID) Device Pilot Program, went into affect on 07/01/10 thru 12/31/15 and is currently running in four counties in California; Los Angeles, Tulare, Alamed, and Sacramento. This bill is also a part of the current CA Vehicle Code Section 23700. Additionally, the costs to install an IID depends on the type of vehicle a person owns, and the monthly costs can range from $65 and up. Additionally, there is an allowance for reduced costs for IID providing a person meets the federal poverty level as defined in Section of 127400 of the Health and Safety Code; no where does it say that a person can be provided with a free IID.

Has drunken driving decreased in those 4 counties listed? There is a pilot program already under way - it's insane to act before the results are in.

~$750 per user guaranteed to the one company for the first year. Is this another big government program written to benefit one company? Where is the free market choice?

I smell political contributions.
