Starvation Wages

Original post made by Survivor, Menlo Park: Downtown, on Dec 18, 2014

Could someone tell me why the City of Menlo Park continues to pay starvation wages to its entry level employees? Job postings indicates wages starting as low as $10.00 an hour. Reviewing the list, many, many city employees are on the payroll between $10.55 and $10.99.

For instance, a recent job opening for a Production Graphic Artist (part time and temporary) dated in October 2014 showed a potential salary beginning at $10.00 and increasing depending on skill level.

Aren't other cities up and down the Peninsula, including cities across America waking up that $10.00 per hour just won't cut it !! Both Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors and the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors have been wrestling with this issue at recent meetings.

How can a community paying top management $200,000 or more per year, with many others that are far too many to count, earing well over $100,000 per year, justify paying starvation wages to anybody? Shouldn' we expect more from a community well known for being one of the wealthiest communities in America?
