Where can I apply for the CEO's job? $193K, splendid. These districts have been dissolved elsewhere. Thanks for running the article.

"Mr. Hickey said he has considered the idea of a new healthcare district for the whole county"
It's just he's never bothered to do more than "consider" it. Ten years on the board and he spent (many whole minutes) considering it!
Funny, that.

pogo is a registered user.
The board has FIVE people. Mr. Hickey is ONE person.
He's certainly tried and hasn't stopped trying.
I think voters will put a stop to the majority of the board who no longer represents their will. We'll see soon enough.
Please vote for HICKEY, MCDOWELL and DE PAULA and end the madness of a hospital district without a hospital.

Mny years ago I attended a few of the Sequoia Health Care District meetings. Having sold off the hospital to Catholic Healthcare West, they should have done the right thing and dissolved their district. But they had personal interests, which has resulted in a conflict of interest for some members over the years.
Their expenditures for their own benefit and the outrageously excessive salary for the District CEO had always bothered me. The Board maintained their positions by having the recipients of rants and their supporters get out the vote to keep the District going. For some period an MD from Sequoia was on the board and the hospital gained a good deal of taxpayer money for their opeation and capital acquisitions.
It is high time to terminate this District and dissolve it.

The physician on the board was Edward Katz who was appointed to replace Jerry Shefren who resigned 4 months after he was elected in 2002. Web Link He was later forced to resign because of an alleged conflict of interest. Web Link
In "Sequoia HCD subsidy of Sequoia Hospital" Web Link I said:
"Director Art Faro is Chair of the Sequoia Hospital Board of Directors. Katie Kane is a Member of that Board. I have suggested that their votes as Members of the Sequoia Healthcare District Board of Directors on Grants to the Sequoia Hospital Foundation constituted a conflict of interest. They have yet to recuse themselves from such votes."
Why have Faro and Kane not been asked to resign from those positions or from the district board of directors?Web Link

The status quo is not an option. LAFCo has placed both healthcare districts(Peninsula and Sequoia) in a "transitional status". They must be consolidated into a countywide district or be dissolved. I have delivered a proposed petition to the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors for them to seek enabling legislation which would allow a countywide vote allowing creation of a single healthcare district funded by existing property taxes. That legislation would provide that failure to get voter approval of the countywide district would result in dissolution of both healthcare districts. The question is: do we trust the County, which manages a medical center and many health related programs, to provide for the healthcare needs of county residents? Or, do we need to designate a portion of property taxes for use by a special district for healthcare purposes. An up or down vote on the dissolution of Sequoia Healthcare District is another option to be used if the enabling legislation sought is not forthcoming.
