Guest opinion: Woodside's water-shortage approach short on action

Original post made on Oct 30, 2014

Culminating six months of fact gathering, attending seminars, and collaborating with a variety of public agencies and boards, Woodside resident Debbie Mendelson (Woodside Sustainability & Conservation Committee and Portola Valley Ad Hoc Water Committee) made a presentation to the Woodside Town Council on July 8, talking about the drought, what nearby communities were doing to conserve water, and noting Woodside had never formulated or implemented any water conservation plan or ordinances as stipulated in the Woodside Town General Plan (adopted by the Town Council in 2012).

Thanks to Kevin Greenwood for calling out the council of Woodside for their cowardice and lack of preparation. As with many other matters, they show that they prefer the sound of their own voices to caring about issues. How outrageous to ignore the work of Ms. Mendelson, who has won awards for her environmental work.

The comment by Marcia is absurd and without foundation.

When Mendelson made her presentation, our Council was polite and gave her a ton of time to make her case without interruption. I thought that the Council was even supportive of some of the recommendations that night. The Council only asked for more information because they questioned the accuracy of her comparative data.

In fact, a lot of people have questioned the data that Mendelson used that night. Several knowledgeable people have demonstrated how differences in Woodside's larger lots, multiple homes on a single property, and our horses and agriculture impact water consumption comparisons to other cities. The fact that our Council wanted additional information before imposing new regulations was prudent. It was certainly not cowardly as Marcia suggested. Personally, I wish other agencies would show that much caution before passing regulations.

Just because the Council did not acquiesce to Mendelson's demands and instantly pass new laws does not equate to disrespect. We appreciate her work but Mendelson is not the judge, jury and final word on these matters. We elected this Council. No one elected her.

It is noteworthy that the gentleman who authored this article, Kevin Greenwood, is Mendelson's long time boyfriend. That doesn't disqualify him, but he is not an unbiased observer.

I think we should give our Council a reasonable chance to examine this important issue and take in public input before passing new laws. It is more important to get this right than be on Kevin Greenwood's time schedule.

In the meantime, we're all doing what we can to conserve water.
