Were the detectives smart enough to correlate the burglaries with PetSmart (like they do on TV)? Or did they just get a lucky break by finding the stolen car?

I'd be interested in knowing how police linked a stolen Porsche, sitting on a Belmont street, with a guy who lives in San Jose - who apparently wasn't caught inside the car when it was spotted. I realize how they caught the girl (through her employment at PetSmart) but I wonder if the girl gave up the guy? Anyone know?
