The Measure M supporters are doing everything they can to keep new customers away from Menlo Park. Look what happens when you have offices that provide such customers:


"NEW RESTAURANTS FLOCK TO DOWNTOWN ... A trio of new restaurants in downtown Palo Alto are in various stages of construction. The first out the gate is expected to be Alkymists, a new fusion restaurant at 140 University Ave., which Palo Alto Grill. The next space scheduled to open is Zola, local restaurateur Guillaume Biennaime's French restaurant. He has gutted the former location of the short-lived Roast Shop at 565 Bryant St. to open his new venture. And Sushirrito is taking over the long and narrow 1,300 square-foot-space at 448 University Ave., which formerly belonged to a string of restaurants -- the most recent was Sabrosa Taqueria. Other previous tenants were Hyderabad House and Thyme to Eat. Known for its sushi burritos in multiple San Francisco locations, Sushirrito is tentatively looking at a fall opening in Palo Alto.

Now Steve Schmidt wants a big box store on the Greenheart or Stanford sites.

A big box store would presumably be retail and sales tax would be generated. Are you thinking R.E.I. or The Container Store? Underground parking? Not a bad alternative."

Won't the merchants already in Menlo Park whom we currently support love that - instead of new customers they will be driven out of business.

Measure M would be a disaster for Menlo Park

Good post. Menlo Park has poor downtown vibrancy, random retail and no community gathering places. Me and the majority of my demographic prefer to spend discretionary dollars in PA, Los Altos or Redwood City.

The El Camino blight with it’s empty lots and tired storefronts is embarrassing. We don’t need MORE retail, we need BETTER retail.

Jason:

if you want better retail then you best vote against measure M. Measure M will assure no additional customers for retail in MP which means no one will be interested in introducing better retail in MP.

I know a very successful south bay restaurateur that looked into MP. He was scared off because he saw downtown MP as "dead." It's dead, in part, because there are no customers. Increase the number of customers by introducing office space that contains folks that need to eat lunch and also want to stop into a close place for a drink or a meal and you have a reason for a more vibrant downtown. Read that as "better" retail. They won't come if there's no reason.
