Low ridership on current trains? Caltrain trains have been standing room only at rush hour in both directions for a couple of years. Ridership has doubled over the last decade, and has been increasing about 10% a year for the last several years. Caltrain is buying some used trains from Metrolink just to fit the current passengers even before electrification. With economic growth, traffic congestion, transit oriented development on the corridor, and a broad shift among younger people to drive less, the ridership growth is expected to continue and the added capacity from electrification is needed.

Menlo Park should also inquire about using liquified natural gas locomotives as an alternative. That is realistic and being explored by other entities. Far less polluting, plentiful, cheaper (now at least).

It takes energy to produce LNG. Energy produced by....wait for it.....burning natural gas.
