Why have there been so many industrial fires in Redwood City?

This is what happens when buildings do not have fire sprinklers. Someday local governments will wise up and require sprinklers in all buildings and homes.

Peter:
they already have. As of 2013 the California Building code requires sprinkler in all residences. Commercial buildings have required them for quite awhile, but for a long time it was dependent on size and use. The building that burned in RC yesterday was pretty old and probably didn't require sprinklers when constructed. As things go forward more and more buildings will end up retrofitting sprinkler systems as they change hands or uses and building permits are issued for work to be done on them. Part of the permitting process is going to require sprinkler installation. In residential remodeling triggers the requirement for sprinklers depending on the amount of construction being done.

In my opinion sprinklers should be mandatory for all buildings having human occupancy regardless of when those structures were built. It will be costly to retrofit existing structures but that is simply the price of saving lives.
Others will certainly disagree.

What a shame. All these years of opportunity to install fire sprinklers. Short sightedness.
