Private schools treated unfairly

Private schools are at a severe disadvantage in the education marketplace. Private schools wishing to build new facilities to handle over-enrollment are faced with obstacles which government schools routinely overcome. Crystal Springs Upland School’s effort to build a middle school in Belmont is one example. A plan to add a gym to Charles Armstrong School in Belmont is another example. One need only look at the relative ease with which the College District built it’s San Mateo Athletic Club and Aquatic Center, and how the huge Performing Arts Centers at Carlmont, Menlo Atherton and San Mateo High were built.
Another example of discrimination can be found in Palo Alto where Castilleja, an all girls school, was fined $256,000 for having too many students!
Why don’t we fine government schools, whose class size reductions of more than 30% have resulted in underutilized facilities, costing taxpayers $Million? If class size was returned to historic levels, there would be a 30% surplus in classroom space which could be leased to private schools.
Let’s level the playing field.

Entertaining rant, Jack.

I find it amusing that your most express desire is for the government to be in the real estate leasing business.

I'm having trouble keeping score. One week you want the government to be smaller, the next you want it to be bigger. Please make up your mind.

Jack do you know absolutely nothing about the Division of the State Architect? Clearly you do not. Every construction projection on every public K-14 school in California has to go through the DSA and anyone who has ever designed or constructed any of those projects will only shake their head at your description of that experience as an "advantage."

Private schools, like any other private construction project, go through the process required for their local authority having jurisdiction, including their planning commissions. Sounds like you would like private schools to get special treatment? Or would you like private schools to go through DSA? Which is it, Jack?

BTW - while the performing arts center at MA may be unusually opulent for a public high school (and is so because the local community raised additional funds) the PAC at Carlmont is quite typical and the PAC at San Mateo HS school has been there for 50 years (the recent project was a renovation of an existing building.)

Get your facts straight before you spout off nonsense.

Gotta tell you, crying for CSU is pretty funny. My wife went there, in it's all girl, debutante-lite days... Have they opened their books up for public scrutiny?

Agree with t the 2 posters above. Stunningly awful comparisons. But keep fighting for CSU. They SO need the help!

FWIW, for what it's worth, I would prefer that the government school districts sell-off their excess school sites(after restoring class size, of course)

Yes, Jack, I knew that. Of course in the ideal world you would be happiest if the entire grade level was taught in a single auditorium with a projectionist from a video feed. Actually, I know that what you would REALLY prefer is that public schools didn't exist at all. Vouchers for all.

Actually what you'd REALLY prefer is that only those that have that no public money be used for education. After all, if you shouldn't have kids unless you can afford to educate them.
