This fine just doesn't make any sense to me, nor does the comment from the so-called "activist in the Peninsula's battle with SOD". Why in the world should this property owner be fined such a large amount for trying to protect his oak trees from Sudden Oak Death? This is just plain crazy. Government run amuck!

Seems to me the town has set a precedent by repeatedly dropping the fine significantly in every past incident noted. If they do not do the same here, there is an expensive lawsuit waiting to happen.
Seems like the law should also be revised to charge fines in line with what residents end up paying, rather than continually dropping the fine.
$26,000 is insane, regardless of the owners purpose or neglect of the law.

I think the Council is right to take a stand.
There are many new residents that are used to paying standaed bribes to get around the rules in their counties of origin. Here where is more difficult to know who to pay off in advance, witting a check for an eventually reduced fine looks like the same bargain, or often a better one.
