Michelle Obama got her farmers' market. The city of Los Angeles is working on an ordinance to allow for residential front yard markets. The USDA Deputy secretary, Kathleen Merrigan, said "Farmers markets are a critical ingredient to our nation's food system. These outlets provide benefits not only to the farmers looking for important income opportunities, but also to the communities looking for fresh, healthy foods." But the Town of Woodside thinks otherwise. Last Wednesday, unincorporated SkyLonda had their first taste of a local farmers market situated across from Alice's Restaurant. There was an overwhelming response with vendors selling out in several hours and with hopes of more vendors the following week. Yet we learned that the Town of Woodside shut down the market with an ordinance banning farmers markets considering them a negative impact on quality of life. However, a petition is being circulated, alternative sites are being explored, and some of us plan to let the Woodside council members know at the upcoming September 11th 7:30p meeting that this ordinance must go.
