Off script. In front of cameras and 2,000 people. Memorial Day weekend talk to the T.A.P.S. event (Tragedy Assistance for Survivors.) For military families that have lost a loved one on active duty. Talks about his son being in Iraq and goes offscript. The guilt of the returning, the survivors, not all losses are equal, the black hole in their heart, suicide.

Love him or hate him, Joe Biden has more humanity than any politician I've heard.

This will help you remember what Memorial Day is really about and that some families will be missing a loved one today because that loved one died on a battlefield somewhere - for US.

That has to be one of teh most honest speachs I've ever seen given by a politician in my life. And yes Peter you are right. Memorial day is about those that gave all for this country - made teh ultimate sacrifice. It is something we can't honestly ever repay. We can only try.

It's not just on the battlefields that we lose them - it's also to suicide and addictions fueled by PTSD. The latter has its own set of horrific problems that affect the vet & their loved ones - it's heartbreaking. I also know veterans from more recent wars who have a variety of health ailments.

I appreciated the Vice President's speech & I echo the sentiments expressed here. For one of the few times in my life, a political speech will be on my mind when tomorrow I spend some time giving thanks.

Not to be outdone, Gary Trudeau highlighted in his own way (perhaps not the elegant op-ed or a fancy speech, but he does have far greater reach) the challenges faced, and especially the losses afterwards of our service members, in Sunday's strip.
