Woodside theater stages 'South Pacific'

Original post made on Oct 30, 2011

If "South Pacific" can enjoy a successful revival on Broadway, then why not try in Woodside, too? Woodside Community Theatre first staged the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical 20 years ago, and is mounting it again. The musical opens Friday, Oct. 28, and will be staged six times through Nov. 6.

I always love to see the annual Woodside Community Theatre shows in the beautiful Woodside High School Performing Arts Center, and this year's "South Pacific" is no exception. The shows are professional quality, with a full orchestra, amazing sets and costumes, and a cast that it is hard to believe all have "day jobs" when they're not singing and dancing for free. South Pacific is one of their best - and the show has so many catchy tunes I'll be singing them for weeks. Beth Ann Wells Viloria is perfectly cast as Nurse Nellie Forbush as is her "Frenchman", Russ Bohard as Emile de Becque. Woodside's own Darlene Batchelder is a hoot as Bloody Mary and Joseph Bresett as Luther Billis is even funnier. Be sure to catch the show on Nov. 4, 5 or 6 or you'll have to drive to San Francisco to catch a live show this good!

I'm not a big fan of going to the theater, but I was VERY impressed with the professionalism of this show. Russ Bohard, the leading man was GREAT - I am surprised he doesn't have a career in movies.
